About Tom Terry
Tom grew in a small town of 800 people in central Oklahoma and gained a passion for weather and especially ‘severe’ weather at an early age. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Meteorology and began his on-air career in television at NBC in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1991. He then worked in Beaumont, Texas as the Chief Meteorologist at ABC for 3 years before getting his first job in Orlando in the summer of 1996. He spent almost 6 years at WKMG, getting up at 3am to do the Morning and Noon weather, and came to WFTV doing the same early shift in April of 2002. He was soon promoted to Chief Meteorologist at WFTV in January of 2003 and it was a short year and half later that a trio of hurricanes “Charley”, “Frances”, and “Jeanne” introduced central Florida to Tom’s famous “Hunker down” phrase that he’s become synonymous with ever since. Tom has been married to his lovely wife Selina for 26 years, and his son Ryan is a pre-med student at FSU and daughter Katie is a Junior Apopka High School. When he’s not rolling his sleeves up tracking a hurricane, Tom enjoys traveling with the family to the mountains of North Carolina and going on a cruise. He also likes working on his Ford Mustang, and listening to audiobooks during his frequent commutes to Orlando from his home in Apopka. He and his wife Selina also started the non-profit “Forever Wishes, Inc.” in 2014 which raises money and toys to benefit Toys for Tots each year. As of 2020, they have raised $133,000 which has been spent buying tens of thousands of toys going directly to local central Florida children.
