State of Florida - Hurricane Updates
The State Emergency Response Team is preparing for Hurricane Ian. The State Emergency Operations Center is activated at Level 1: Full Activation.
ESF 18 is staffed from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Our team is available to respond to any questions, concerns, or unmet needs of the business community. You can reach us by sending an email to ESF18@EM.MyFlorida.com or by calling the Private Sector Hotline at 850-815-4925.
ESF 18 began hosting a daily Private Sector Coordination Call, September 26, 2022, to provide the latest information and updates to the business community. Businesses are welcome to participate in the coordination call and share updates about their operational status, supply chain concerns, and barriers to economic resilience.
Businesses located in Florida are encouraged to review the Business Re-Entry Procedures and ensure that employees have the required documentation prior to the storm's arrival.
VISIT FLORIDA has activated the Emergency Accommodations Module on Expedia.com to provide real-time hotel and lodging availability for impacted Floridians and visitors throughout the state.
Hurricane Ian:
• At 5:00 PM EDT Tuesday, A hurricane warning was extended to southward in southwestern Florida • At 2:00 PM EDT Tuesday, Ian was upgraded to a major hurricane while located near the Isle of Youth, Cuba. • As of 8 AM EDT Tuesday, Ian was located over western Cuba, about 130 miles SSW of the Dry Tortugas and moving N around 12 mph. • Ian will emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico later this morning, pass west of the Florida Keys later today, and approach the west coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area on Wednesday and Wednesday night, however, impacts could will continue to spread northward from the southern Peninsula through the remainder of the week. • As Ian continues to increase in intensity, the storm will also grow in size. Impacts can and will spread well beyond the center; therefore, it is important to not focus on the exact forecast track of Ian.
Florida Outlook:
• A Hurricane Warning is in effect for 6 Florida Counties, with a Hurricane Watch is in effect for 9 additional western Peninsula counties. • Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for 13 Central and South Florida Counties, with Tropical Storm Watches in effect for 19 southeastern and North Florida Counties. • A Storm Surge Warning is in effect from Anclote River to Flamingo, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for the FL Keys, as well as from the Aucilla River to the Anclote River and on the East Coast from the Flagler/Volusia Line northward, including the St. Johns River. • Devastating storm surge values of 5-10 feet are expected in and around Tampa Bay and southward to Bonita Beach; 4-8 feet along the Nature Coast and Southwest Florida Coast south of Bonita Beach; and 2-5 feet for eastern Apalachee Bay, the Northeast Florida coast (including the St. Johns River), and the Florida Keys and southern Southwest Florida • Tropical storm-force winds may arrive on this afternoon or evening the Keys and coastal Southwest Florida. Tropical storm-force winds may then spread from south to north along portions of the Peninsula Wednesday and could arrive in the Northeast Florida by Thursday. Hurricane conditions could arrive in West Central Florida Wednesday afternoon. • Rainfall will be a major and potentially catastrophic hazard with this storm. While most of the Peninsula will receive 5-10” of rain with isolated higher amounts up to 14” possible, some areas in West Central Florida near the track of Ian could experience 12-16” of rain with localized totals of 24-30” are possible. Heavy rainfall of 5-12” is also possible in the Florida Big Bend and Northeast Florida, but these totals will depend on the ultimate track of Ian. 4-6” of rain with locally higher amounts up to 8” are forecast for South Florida and the Keys. A Flood Watch is in effect for all of the Florida Peninsula. • Isolated tornadoes occurred in the Keys overnight, and the continued risk for tornadoes exists today for Central and South Florida areas south of I-4.
DEO
• DEO activated the private sector hotline: 850-815-4925 and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The email for additional information or specific needs is ESF18@em.myflorida.com. • DEO reminds companies and municipalities to be careful and "do not cut fiber" to help in recovery.
Meteorology
• Ian is now official a category 3 hurricane. Will continue to move northwest and is expected to intensify till it makes landfall in the Tampa Bay or Port-Charlotte area. • Once Ian makes landfall it is expected to slow down significantly and move at about 5mphs over the Florida peninsula. It is expected to reach Jacksonville early Friday morning.
Emergency Management
• Currently working with FEMA for additional trucking waivers in GA, Al, SC, MS, and LA). As of now, these waivers have not been approved. • Port terminals are going to stay open as long as possible to ensure supply chains continue to run smoothly. • Power restoration will be giving priority to hospitals and 911 call centers. Next priority will be largest areas of power outage impacts. • Estimating 25,000 employees for power and utility restoration post storm. • Working on preparations for future needs 3 to 5 days out. • Working to ensure all sheltering and evacuation notices are distributed.
